10 Years of Growth: The Chamber’s Journey and Mine

Behind every organization that grows into something meaningful is a group of people who quietly, consistently, and wholeheartedly invest in its success. For the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, one of those people is Maureen Maiuri. Over the past decade, Maureen has been more than a team member — she has been a steady force behind the scenes, helping shape the Chamber during its earliest days and supporting its growth into the thriving organization it is today.

What began as professional support through an external partner organization quickly became something more: a true mission match. Through long hours, countless events, and a deep commitment to the community we serve, Maureen has helped build the infrastructure, relationships, and culture that make the Chamber what it is today. As we celebrate a Decade of Impact, we are incredibly grateful for the dedication, sacrifices, and heart she has poured into this work.

In her own words below, Maureen reflects on what the Chamber’s 10-Year Anniversary means to her.

10 Years of Growth:

The Chamber’s Journey and Mine

By Maureen Maiuri, Operations Manager

For many years as a meteorologist, June 1 marked the beginning of hurricane season for me – a stressful six-month stretch of tracking tropical systems, staying alert, and rarely finding rest.

But in 2018, when my company, Manifest Creative, began its partnership with the Chamber, June 1 took on an entirely new meaning. While it has always marked the beginning of Pride Month, it became a time I personally began to recognize – an opportunity to reflect, to celebrate, and to stand proudly in who I am.

What started as a shift in perspective has, over time, become something much more personal. Each year, June 1 has carried deeper significance as I’ve grown more fully into my true self—both personally and professionally. It now represents not just resilience in the face of storms, but also authenticity, community, and pride.

As I reflect on the Chamber’s 10 Year Anniversary, I can’t help but see how much their journey mirrors my evolution.

Watching a Vision Become an Institution

When I first became involved with the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, it was only in its second year. The vision was bold. The momentum was undeniable. The foundation of an organization that would become vital to our community was just beginning to take shape.

Through my work with Manifest Creative, I stepped in as the Chamber’s Executive Administrator. At the time, none of us could have predicted what the next decade would hold — for the organization or for me personally.

In those early years, everything required intention. Every event was built from the ground up. Every partnership was cultivated with care. Every member represented not just a business, but a belief that LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs and professionals deserved visibility, advocacy, and economic empowerment in Houston.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed the Chamber evolve from a promising initiative into a respected and influential force in our region. We’ve expanded programming, deepened corporate partnerships, strengthened advocacy efforts, and built a network that truly supports LGBTQ+ and allied businesses.

What began as a small but mighty community has grown into a powerful ecosystem supporting LGBTQ+ and allied businesses across our region.

And I’ve had a front-row seat to all of it.

Growing Alongside the Chamber

While the Chamber was finding its footing, so was I. When I first started, I was focused on doing good work — executing, organizing, supporting the mission. But over time, something deeper happened. The Chamber wasn’t just a professional environment; it became a space where I could explore who I am.

Through the relationships I built, the leaders I supported, and the members I served, I began to better understand my own identity. I found language. I found confidence. I found belonging.

The Chamber network became more than colleagues and clients; it became family.

In rooms filled with entrepreneurs, advocates, and change-makers, I saw reflections of possibility. I saw people living authentically. I saw leadership that embraced vulnerability and strength at the same time. That environment gave me permission to do the same.

The Power of Community

There’s something extraordinary about being part of a community that grows with you.

The Chamber’s mission is about economic inclusion and empowerment. But what I’ve experienced personally is inclusion in its truest sense — being seen, valued, and supported not just for what I do, but for who I am.

Over the past decade, I’ve grown professionally, from supporting the Chamber through an external partner to becoming part of its internal team. But I’ve also grown personally.

I’ve stepped more fully into my identity. I’ve built lifelong relationships. I’ve found purpose in the work we do.

That kind of growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in community.

Ten Years — and Just Getting Started

Anniversaries invite reflection, but they also invite vision.

If the last ten years have taught me anything, it’s that intentional leadership and authentic community-building create lasting impact. I am incredibly proud of what the Chamber has become and deeply grateful to have played a role in its journey.

But this milestone isn’t just about looking back. It’s also about looking forward.

As someone who has been part of the Chamber’s story almost from the beginning, I’m honored to continue helping shape what comes next. The work of building inclusive economic opportunity, elevating LGBTQ+ businesses, and strengthening our community is far from finished, and I’m excited to remain an integral part of that future.

The Chamber helped shape the professional I am today. It also helped shape the person I am today.

And as we step into the next decade, I’m proud to continue growing alongside the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, helping guide its evolution, supporting its members, and ensuring that the community that gave me so much continues to thrive for years to come.

Thank you, Maureen!

As Maureen reflects on her journey alongside the Chamber, we are reminded that the success of this organization has always been powered by people who believe deeply in the mission. Maureen’s commitment, resilience, and willingness to go above and beyond — often behind the scenes — have helped carry the Chamber through pivotal moments of growth.

We are profoundly grateful for the many ways she has supported our members, our leadership, and the broader LGBTQ+ and allied community. Finding your mission match is rare, and Maureen found hers here. The Chamber is stronger because of her dedication, and as we look ahead to the next decade, we are thankful that she continues to be part of the story we are writing together.
