New Park Will House LGBT Remembrance Garden

A new city pocket park in Montrose may help pay tribute to the city's rich LGBT history.

Construction is set to begin in August to turn a vacant lot on Lower Wesheimer into Avondale Promenade Park. The City of Houston purchased the quarter-acre parcel of land in 2015 with an eye toward creating a new park.

Plans call for moving the Montrose Remembrance Garden, a tribute to victims of hate crimes, to a permanent home within Avondale Promenade Park, according to a report from the Houston Business Journal. In time, the park may also include a timeline and interpretive panels that tell the story of Houston’s LGBT community and the surrounding area, the paper said.

The park will also include a Craftsman-style pavilion in keeping with the architecture of the surrounding neighborhoods as well as a brick promenade with trees and light fixtures, a garden area, benches, play and exercise area and a dog run.

Avondale Promenade Park is slated for completion in early 2020.
