First-of-its-kind survey aims to learn more about Houston's LGBTQ+ community

Researchers and nonprofits hope to learn more about the unique needs of Houston's large LGBTQ+ community.

Despite having queer history as rich as San Francisco or New York, there's little to no data about Houston's LGBTQ+ community. Two of the city's biggest LGBTQ+ groups and researchers at Rice University hope to fix that.

The Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, the Montrose Center and Rice University's Kinder Institute for Urban Research are partnering to launch the Houston Area L.O.V.E (LGBTQ+ Opinions, Voices & Experiences) Survey. It's a project that began in earnest in 2021, when Tammi Wallace, the CEO of the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, realized there was no comprehensive data about how queer Houstonians live and work. For the Chamber, which promotes economic policies benefiting LGBTQ+ Houstonians, it was much-needed information.

"When we think about economic inclusion and closing economic gaps, we need this information," Wallace told Chron. "We need it when we think about how we're going to push economic policies, whether it's at the city, the county, state or federal level. This is just a huge gap not having this [data]."
