Greater Houston LGBT Chamber Denounces DACA Decision

HOUSTON (September 6, 2017) – The Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce denounces the Trump Administration’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, which has provided hope for so many young people seeking to live free and openly in this country.

The 2012 adoption of DACA by the Obama Administration allowed hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the U.S. by their parents to come out of the shadows, go to school, work and contribute to their communities. President Trump’s decision to reverse this policy puts these individuals in limbo.

The administration plans to terminate the policy within six months to allow Congress time to act. But if Congress is not able to reach a resolution, that will mean an uncertain future for so many young people.

“This decision is bad on many fronts,” says Tammi Wallace, co-chair of the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber. “First it robs young people who have done nothing wrong of a legitimate future in our nation. Second, it potentially eliminates an entire segment of the workforce, denying businesses of the qualified employees they need to be productive. This action is bad for business, it’s bad for families and it’s simply un-American.”
